Samantha JulianSalt Lake City, Utah—Samantha Mary Julian, an energy expert with vast experience in business management, will become the Director of the newly-created Office of Energy Development housed in the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Energy Advisor Amanda Smith who also serves as the executive director of DEQ announced the appointment today. On May 2, Julian will head the Energy Office, a position appointed by and managed by the Governor's Energy Advisor, and created by the 2011 Legislature under HB 475.

"I'm pleased Samantha will lead our energy team to successfully move forward with implementing Governor Herbert's 10-year strategic energy plan," Smith said. "Samantha has an impressive background that demonstrates her ability to work with industry and stakeholders to forge ahead with a successful energy future in Utah."

Since 2009 Julian has served as the Director of Energy and Natural Resources Cluster for the Governor's Office of Economic and Development (GOED) where she worked to promote Utah's energy resources, technology, renewable energy and energy efficiency throughout the state.

"Governor Herbert has identified economic development as a top priority for the State, and energy is a key component to that economic focus," said Spencer Eccles, executive director of the Governor's Office of Economic Development. "Samantha Julian's move from the energy cluster director to the director of the newly created Office of Energy Development will seamlessly marry economic development and energy together for the benefit of all Utahns."

Prior to her position with GOED, Julian was the business development manager for the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the festival coordinator for Sundance and community investment advisor for United Way of Salt Lake City. She holds a political science degree from the University of Utah and in 2010 received an MBA at Westminster College.

"It is exciting for me to be able to push Utah forward with the Governor's energy plan to success that continues to promote Utah's energy resources and create jobs."

Julian, 35, lives with her husband, Jay. W. Julian, and two dogs in Sandy, Utah.
