About the State Energy Program

If you've bought gasoline or paid a utility bill recently, you know how important it is for America to reduce its energy dependence and to develop affordable, energy-efficient technologies to run our homes, businesses, schools, and vehicles.

The State Energy Program, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, is here to do just that. Managed by the Utah Geological Survey, the Utah State Energy Program supports partnerships that promote and improve energy efficiency and turn renewable energy resources into viable alternatives to fossil fuels.

We encourage you to use this site to stay abreast of energy news and information, policy changes, events, and programs that help drive many of the energy initiatives in Utah.

History

In response to energy supply problems throughout the West, in 2000 and 2001, and the growing realization of the need to coordinate energy policy and programs, the Office of Energy and Resource Planning and the Office of Energy Services were merged administratively as the Utah Energy Office (UEO) under DNR in early 2001. This reorganization was formally codified with the passage of H.B. 145 during the 2002 Legislative General Session and H.B. 202 during the 2003 Legislative General Session.

Utah Energy Office Reorganized

On May 15, 2005, the Utah Energy Office functions were divided between several State agencies. The Governor's Office coordinates energy policy, the Utah Geological Survey operates the State Energy Program (SEP), the Department of Environmental Quality operates the Clean Fuels Vehicle Grant and Loan, PowerForward, and EnergyWise programs, and the Division of Facilities Construction and Management operates the State Buildings Energy Efficiency Program.

Mission

The State Energy Program provides direct support and access to federal funding for energy efficiency, energy conservation, and renewable energy programs and projects in the State of Utah.
